www.nlm.nih.gov - There seemed to be a lot of discussion online as to exactly when Harry Potter was born but the general consensus is that his birthday matched that of his inventor, JK Rowling, that being July 31st - his birth occurring "as the seventh month dies".

As to the year, there are a lot of calculations based on information given in her various books but the one that seems most solid is this: Harry's parents died on October 31, 1981 when Harry was but one year old. So he was born in 1980.

So Saturday is his birthday and there are lots of celebrations going on around the world. Libraries are giving readings from the series, restaurants are honoring the day with goodies like chocolate frogs, cockroach clusters, rock cakes in the styles of both Mrs. Weasley and Hagrid, Snape's caldroun cakes, pumpkin pasties, chocolate wands, Professor Flitwick's cherry fizz, butterbeer and wizard cookies. Museums are giving free admission to their Harry Potter Exhibitions.

The National Library of Medicine has created an exhibit entitled "Harry Potter's World: Renaissance Science, Magic, and Medicine" which is a look at the historical roots behind the magic described in the Harry Potter books. The exhibit is on a library tour throughout the U.S. the rest of the this year.
