| | www.dailytech.com - After 8 years of development, Blizzard Entertainment finally released the next installment in their popular Starcraft game franchise, "Starcraft II: Wings of Libery" and so far the reviews have been mostly positive, although there have been some complaints.

In general, people have expressed that they are impressed with the graphics and the game play. The complaints primarily surround the lack of support for playing the game across a local area network, something you were able to do with the original version of Starcraft. The new release requires that each gamer log in to Blizzard's BattleNet on the internet first before they can initiate a multiplayer game. Blizzard insists that this allows them to prevent the software from being pirated but many players are upset because they lack internet access or their internet access is very slow, making gameplay frustrating.
Another common complaint is that the new release contains only the first campaign in a trilogy of games and only allows you to play as the Terran race. Starcraft allows gamers to play one of 3 different races; Terrans (humans), Protoss (highly evolved aliens), or Zerg (insect-like aliens). The multiplayer version of Starcraft II allows you to play as any one of these races but the solo mission included in the game doesn't. Players will have to wait for 2 upcoming expansion packs to complete the solo campaign, one for the Zerg and one for the Protoss. While some gamers have complained that this is a cash grab by Blizzard, it's not uncommon in the gaming world to have multiple expansion packs to a game and the content Blizzard creates is unquestionably worth paying for.
The campaign in the new game is a continuation of the previous "Starcraft" game and "Starcraft: Brood Wars" expansion pack. This campaign centers around the character of Jim Raynor who has been part of the game from the beginning. In this episode Raynor finds himself leading a group of insurgents against the Terran authorities. A new feature in the campaign mode is an non-linear "open sandbox" style of play that allows you to pick up side missions working as a mercenary to build up resources. And as always, the campaign has underlying linear story that plays out as the game progresses.
So while the votes have yet to be cast as to whether gamers gives the thumbs up or thumbs down to the new release of Starcraft, if you ignore the lack of LAN gaming support it looks like this could be one of the most popular releases of the year. | |
