www.starpulse.com - The Queen came to Comic Con yesterday as Academy Award winner Helen Mirren made her first ever appearance at the pop culture convention and she even wore a tribute T-shirt she designed herself in memory of comic book writer Harvey Pekar who passed away earlier this week.
Mirren said she was a fan of Pekar's work, best known for his American Splendor comic series.
"I’m wearing a t shirt in [tribute] to Harvey Pekar who I thought was a great, great artist. I thought it was all about comic book heroes and boys kind of stuff. He revealed the fact that a graphic novel could be as deep, complex, personal and psychological as any other work of art: novel, movie, painting, anything. So I think that this world, I think it’s really exciting to see it burgeoning and expanding and changing as it goes into a real total art form. I think we’re at a very exciting point in the whole era, the whole ether, the whole development of comic books. I’m fascinated to see where it’s going to be in another 20 years."
Mirren was at Comic Con to promote the movie "RED" which she co-stars in with Bruce Willis. The movie is based on the DC graphic novel series "RED" written by Warren Ellis and illustrated by Cully Hamner. RED is an acronym for "Retired and Extremely Dangerous" and story revolves around CIA operatives that become targets because of their knowledge of corruption within the organization. It's the first action role Mirren has taken on and she was excited at the opportunity to reach new audiences and try new roles.
“It was easier than I thought it would be-it was great to have guns instead of words,” Mirren said.
